Sanganer is one of the 13 sub-districts or tehsils of the district of Jaipur and is 16 kilometres from the inner city Jaipur. Specked with colour all the time, Sanganer is well-known for its traditional block printing and handmade paper manufacturing industries.
Sanganer began as a sleepy village located at the bend of Aman-i-shah river. In the early 16th century, the Kachchwaha Rajput prince "Sangaji" founded a fortified town as the tehsil or administrative centre of one of the states formed by clans of Rajput nobles. By the 17th century Sanganer was thriving place partially due to its strategic location along the major trade routes leading to Amber in the north and Mughal imperial highway stretch passing east-west linking Agra and Ajmer and further the sea ports of Gujarat.
Sanganer today, is a base for flourishing printing and dying industries and home to traditional skilled chippa, rangrez, kagzi communities. The place is undergoing rapid transformation in its physical form and social attributes and raising environmental issues related to discharge of industrial waste.
